Bryan, go easy on johnny and cool the violence-slapping men or women is just not right. He probably has never been in a war zone or under fire. And probably does not know the history of the ACLU and how they defend a LOT of very guilty people, and defend crimminals and perverts like NAMBLA.
They have done little good, but a LOT of tearing down of our rights. The ACLU started as communist front.

whew! I'm glad you guys know that. I just have a tendency towards sarcasm. What can I say? It's the same tired old arguement " in my day things were great, we were better, etc." Well they weren't, just different. History will take a lot more time than just a generation or two to prove if that's the case or not. I probably shouldn't throw too many stones because I'm guilty as hell of doing the same thing to my kids ranting and raving how we didn't have so much TV and video when I was a kid etc. etc.

I know full well the history but that's also being taken out of historical context. They started in the depression, MANY people began to become interested in communist type politics - they were freakin starving and desperate. They certainly weren't getting anything out of capitalism then were they? These phantom commie leanings were more along the lines of trying to empower the powerless rather than any sinister anti-american red scare. How conveniently people forget how many rights we have today because people fought for them. Think what you want about labor movements and unions ( I'm not allways a huge fan of unions myself ) but what exactly would have been the incentive to pay people better, give them a lunch break, let them be sick without losing their job, etc etc if people hadn't organized and DEMANDED these rights?

I realize this is a huge tangent but I am thankful for the ACLU and feel the need to defend them.
